Aims and scope

Over the past few years, the development of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) has attracted the attention of academics, practitioners and policy-makers. These OS initiatives were primarily launched by communities of motivated “user-developers”, building original social networks. For FLOSS to last, the OS must be diffused to new populations of users (individuals, businesses, government agencies).

The motivation of these populations to adopt FLOSS may however differ from those of initial user-developers. Besides, such an evolution questions the architecture of the whole software industry and the cooperation and competition between the FLOSS model and the traditional model of Software production and development. The objective of this workshop is to study the consequences of the transition between the two phases and aims to build an active European research network dedicated to this issue, which could lead to a second workshop followed by a collective publication either in a special

List of Topics

We welcome submissions on one of these three topics:

1. OSS Production and Communities of developers:

  • Network of developers: structure of the innovation network, type of links/relationships inside the network, trust
  • Organisational and Managerial issues linked to FLOSS development: individual and social incentives and motivation, modularity and team organisation, centralised versus decentralised monitoring of FLOSS communities
  • Quality, safety and liability of FLOSS

2. Impacts of OSS on the Software Industry:

  • Competition and cooperation between proprietary software and FLOSS
  • Reengineering of the Software Industry and of Software-editors strategies
  • Hybridisation between Commercial and Non commercial uses of FLOSS
  • Business models for Commercial Free Software (case studies and longitudinal analyses ; theoretical analysis and welfare impact)
  • Licences, Contracts and Intellectual Property Rights Management: Law and Economics analysis of FLOSS licences ; Interoperability, standards and competition issues

3. Private and Public uses of FLOSS:

  • Typology of users and of motives for adoption o Empirical analysis of users’ characteristics
  • Communities of users: role in software diffusion, role in software development.

Empirical as well as theoretical contributions are welcome. Extended abstract will be considered yet a higher priority will be given to full papers. Since FLOSS embraces many aspects, we would like to bring together scientists from different disciples such as Economics, Business & Management, Sociology, Law, Information and Communication Sciences.
