Which regions benefit from emerging new industries? Evidence from photovoltaic and other high-tech industries
Submitted by Holger Graf on 22 March, 2010 - 15:51.
International Conference at the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH), Halle (Saale), Germany
Organised by Jutta Günther, Matthias Brachert, Christoph Hornych (IWH Halle), Uwe Cantner, and Holger Graf (FSU Jena)
When new industries emerge, initial locations are usually unevenly distributed across space and differ regarding their participation in the growth of the industry during its life cycle. Looking at Eastern Germany for example, a number of regions were successful in attracting significant production capacities in photovoltaic industry although West German regions showed better preconditions regarding regional knowledge base and capital endowment. The conference therefore aims to develop deeper insights in the evolution of location patterns of new (high tech) industries, e.g. photovoltaic and other new industries, and tries to contribute to the discussion on differences in regional opportunities to benefit as locations of new industries. We therefore search for papers which focus on explaining determinants for the location of new industries.
We are considering making a publication (special edition of a journal or an edited volume) of selected papers presented at the conference.
