1st DIME Scientific Conference

7-8-9th April, 2008
BETA, University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France
Update : Programme and downloadable papers and/or abstracts

Background:

Contemporary economic, social and geopolitical developments are strongly influenced by two trends: the increasing globalization of the economy and the rise of the knowledge society. This confronts Europe with major organizational challenges. The DIME (Dynamics of Institution and Markets in Europe) Network of Excellence, aims to analyse the dynamic features of these processes. The “DIME-vision” is strongly rooted in the idea of multi-level governance as a way of solving many collective problems related to the generation and use of knowledge in the European society at large. Because of the localized and tacit character of knowledge, and its embodiment in specific communities of practice and networks of practitioners, it is essential to take into account the spatial nature of knowledge generation and exchange activities as well as sectoral industrial structure and the configuration of organizations. Indeed, proximity (both in a spatial and organizational sense) plays an essential role in the circulation of knowledge.

In April 2008, DIME will be ending its 3rd year of existence. At this occasion, we aim to create an opportunity for the presentation of the most salient dimensions of DIME research, and to open a space for debating them with a broader community.

This call seeks for novel contributions in all areas covered by DIME (http://www.dime-eu.org/about/networking-researchers). Priority will be given to younger researchers.

The conference will have both plenary sessions and parallel sessions. Plenary sessions will (usually) be organized by coordinators of DIME work packages. Topics for these plenary sessions that have been received so far include:

Spaces of the knowledge economy and its policy implications

  • Is there a "European paradox" ?
  • Macroeconomic management in a "knowledge economy"
  • Growth and Fluctuations: histories and theories
  • IPR, appropriability and rates of innovation: what do we know from the evidence ?
  • Inequalities and a new technoeconomic paradigm: technology-driven? Trade-driven? Politics-driven?
  • The end of the "visible hand"?
  • Finance and Innovation: What sort of Relationship?

Also, a specific plenary session will be organised involving the DIME stakeholders.

The parallel sessions will be put together from the list of accepted papers from this open call, and from specific proposals received from DIME coordinators. Three such sessions have already been scheduled:

  • Communities and Incentives for knowledge creation
  • Evolutionary theories in environmental economics
  • Measurement or indicators of the knowledge economy

Proposals for contributions to the parallel sessions are now invited. Topics for such contributions include, but are not limited to, the topics listed above for parallel and plenary sessions. All proposals covering the general topics of DIME will be considered. Participation and submission of proposals is open to those who are not DIME members.

A “DIME” price for the best paper will be awarded to a young researcher (less then 5 years after PhD).
