Measuring Regional Innovativeness. A Methodological Discussion and an Application to One German Industry

Submitted by Bart Verspagen on 12 September, 2007 - 22:33.

Number:
2007-13
Author(s):
Tom Broekel, MPI
Thomas Brenner, MPI
The regional or national innovation performance has been repeatedly measured in the literature; but it has so far not been discussed what this means, especially in relation to a region. What is the contribution of a region to innovation output? The usual approaches implicitly assume that higher innovation outputs per inhabitant, employee, or R&D employee can be assigned to a region.  read more »

No Place Like Home? Location choice and firm survival after forced relocation in the German machine tool industry

Submitted by Bart Verspagen on 12 September, 2007 - 11:45.

Number:
2007-11
Author(s):
Guido Buenstorf, MPI

2007-05
Author(s):
Bart Verspagen, Ecis

This paper discusses the possibility of a spatial hierarchy of innovation and growth dynamics in Europe. A spatial hierarchy is understood as a geographical clustering of regions, where important differences exist in terms of innovation and growth dynamics between the clusters  read more »

Corporate growth and industrial dynamics: evidence from French manufacturing

This work explores basic properties of the size and growth rates distributions of firms at the aggregate and disaggregate levels. Using an extensive dataset on French manufacturing firms, we investigate which properties of firm size distributions and growth dynamics characterize the aggregate dynamics and are, at the same time, robust under disaggregation.  read more »

Recent finance literature highlights the role of technological change in increasing firm specific and aggregate stock price volatility (Campbell et al. 2001, Shiller 2000, Pastor and Veronesi 2005). Yet innovation data is not used in these analyses, leaving the direct relationship between innovation and volatility untested.  read more »

Sunk costs due to entry into foreign markets have been used as the main justification the relationship between firm productive efficiency and exports. We use a large-scale firm-level dataset of French manufacturing firms to evaluate how sunk costs affect the productivity dynamics of new exporters.  read more »

This paper analyses market selection in French manufacturing goods markets over the last decade, under the hypothesis that the competitive challenges which firms have to face may change along its life cycle. We find that on average, exiting firms display below-average performance levels in terms of profitability and productivity.  read more »
