The negotiations on the Climate Conference in Copenhagen highlighted once again that environmental innovation and access of newly industrializing countries (NIC) to environmental friendly technologies are important elements of strategies to combat environmental problems on a global level. The integration of environmental innovations in the economic development process of NICs and the role of the EU in this endeavour are a key topic of the workshop. There have been several activities within DIME using e.g. evolutionary economics, systems of innovation approaches or transition management concepts. The workshop’s objective is also to contribute to the understanding which of these approaches might be interesting for applications to NICs. Several researchers from NICs will be invited to participate at the workshop.
We encourage theoretical and empirical papers, case studies as well as statistical analysis with a special focus on the role of environmental friendly technologies in NICs. Issues of particular interest in this workshop include:

  1. International transfer of environmentally friendly technologies to NICs
  2. Absorptive capacity and learning in NICs with regard to sustainability related knowledge
  3. Cross-cutting issues: effects of environmental policies on innovation; impact of transnational regimes, such as WTO, IPR, UNFCCC; role of multinational enterprises
  4. The emergence of an environmental industry and suppliers of technology in NICs
  5. Environmental innovation in industry
  6. Sectoral case studies, e.g. in energy, water and transport in NIC
